I recommend you take out whatever bandits you can around the area and slowly attack better armed groups to get better weapons. Another strategy is to search in ruins for the odd weapon you can find there. I have yet to do much of anything combat related in Kenshi. Partially because I can't make up my damn mind which weapon type to start with. I would go with the katana but I'm not sure if the attack bonus would make any difference once you have the skill built up, same with sabres and defense. Overall a great weapon useful against all enemy types without requiring stats or skill levels to be used properly. There are a ton of reasons for standard polearm. I've covered in other threads in great detail (if you care to look them up), it's just a great weapon in terms of game mechanics.
