Every new Docker or VM you install now will always been stored on the cache drive now and newer will be moved by the Mover to the array. I’ve used zfs with both freenas and unraid. If you use a parity drive (or two) in an unraid volume you don't lose anything, which is the point of the parity drive. It doesnt replace a backup.

That means that if you want your appdata only on your cache then you should set it to "prefer", that way any data in the appdata share will always be moved from the array to the cache …trurl.
