The Paleogene (alternatively Palaeogene) Period is a unit of geologic time that began 66 and ended 23.03 Ma and comprises the first part of the Cenozoic Era. This period consists of the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene Epochs. Paleocene EpochAn epoch is the second smallest geochronologic unit, between a period and an age. It is the equivalent of a chronostratigraphic series. As of April 2022 there are currently 37 defined and one informal epochs/series.
