So far, I have a modded spaghetti base where most of the science materials are hand-fed. I'm looking to have my more permanent base be a city block design. I was thinking either 3x3 or 6x6 chunk blocks. My main question is whether to go for a 2-lane (1 per direction) or 4-lane (2 per direction) rail network.

But you have to make more complex city blocks. Let say ore to ingots. And ingots to blue chips. (Ingot is a tech u learn once u go to space). Basically multiple steps in one block. An extra blueprint with the station with enough overlap with the block blueprint that it can be easily and confidently placed makes it pretty straightforward to customize blocks according to how many stations are needed. Also made a BP with two stacked stations - sometimes 4 stations in a block aren't quite enough.

Raw resource input to all science @ 1 science/minute output. It would be space inefficient, but highly expandable. Under a current typical system, you have to build 5 or 6 or more peice to expand production of one type of science. My goal is to require only building more blocs. 2.Keep it in one city block (or maybe two adjacent ones, not connected by trains but underground pipes) as long as it fits. I made my first cityblock recently and my only recommendation is to make them rectangular instead of square. I think rectangles work way better than squares, because the production block is usually already a square, so for optimal space efficiency you then have to weirdly wrap your train station around the production block, which gets significantly more difficult with the more complicated recipes.I have two games going right now using the city grids from Nilaus. When you have "city blocks" you can ask yourself the question, "what product do I need more of right now?". Let's say that your yellow science is lower than the others, ticking around (say) 250SPM instead of the 330SPM the other sciences are producing. Very large city blocks with a lot of trains can incur a noticeable performance drop since adding a lot of loops in a graph greatly increases pathfinding calculation costs. Also you do not need the best high performance throughput junctions in a city block map because if done properly the traffic does distribute itself over the grid.
