If you don't want a heavy hitter you can go with a mixed strategy. The Rapier is quite good 1v1 and against most bosses (particularly with the right ring set). It's terrible against skeletons and below average against mobs so you could go with special weapons (maybe the Bastard Sword against mobs -- no shortage of good choices here.
