In 2002, the owner of the lots requested US$300,000 for the land, an extortionately high price for land in this area at this time. In the end, community support saved the property and the non-profit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens was formed. Joel Garcia (born 1955, died 2023) is a Mexican papier-mâché artist who first met the Zagars in the 1990s. Garcia was trained by renowned papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares and is now famous across Mexico and the United States.
