I built the harvester first hoping I could shovel dirt directly into the harvester which didn't work. :( Thats how the floating dirt ended up there making the miner work. Bought the forged harvester and connected it very close to cloutium intake pipe, put a funnel on top and voila, it doesn't work. Pressure on the harvester is 245, durability at 100, gears are moving. yes, you can hand feed a harvester. it's not very efficient, though. honestly I would wait on automation since in its current state it's kind of a buggy mess. Not sure if the dev will fix it or not. he seems to enjoy making the game worse given he killed off all the utility of the goliath drills. The model of the t2 harvester seems to have a tiny gap in the middle and it seems to influence the dirt chunks when falling in it may fall through the grinding part and land on the funnel looking bottom. Used to be that the old Goliath drills spat out large chunks of dirt onto the conveyors. Now the only way to get large chunks is to manually drop smaller chunks together.
