Some CMDRs like to chase the maximum range stat like it means something but as long as your ship is getting 40+ lights per jump you can explore about 99.95% of the galaxy. Vulture is top dog of Small combat ship, and really the best combat ship short of about 17 million benchmark. Chieftain is the cheapest Medium combat ship, it's very agile and hits pretty hard with excellent armor. Same with Federal Assault Ship, but no rank grind.
