Jan 1, 2014 · The Muddy Sandstone in the Powder River Basin (PRB), northeast Wyoming, is a promising reservoir for CO 2 sequestration because: (1) existing wells for hydrocarbon production can be used for CO 2 injection when a field is depleted; and (2) data are available to assess the ability and capacity to trap CO 2. The Muddy Sandstone may be the most complicated Cretaceous formation in the Powder River basin. Although generally less than 100 ft thick, it contains a wide variety of facies. Two unconformities, one of which is largely intraformational, are associated with the Muddy. Whereas, terminal distributary channels, usually having poorly sorted, medium to coarse-grained, unidirectional trough cross-stratification sandstone containing occasional mud clasts, flute casts and plant fragments.
