Dodge ram stuck in 4th gear
Feb 14, 2011 · It dropped from drive to 4th gear with the engine indicator light on. I pulled over, turn off truck, and restarted. I have a 1999 ram 3500 Cummins Diesel with manual 5-speed transmission approx. (78,000 miles). Transmission is stuck in 4th gear. cannot physically move the gear shift. Does anyone have a suggestion? I am not a heavy duty mechanic.

If you were stuck in 4th gear full time (even from a stop, which makes it feel really sluggish), then it is likely an electrical problem (wiring or a bad sensor). It's got 3,000 km on it and whenever the weather gets cold (-20 Celius or more), and I use the speed switch for manual shifting the transmission gets stuck in 4th gear. There are at least 5 solenoids, a pressure sender (line) and temp sender inside the transmission. This is all according to an ASTG manual. It confirms that 2nd gear only is limp-home mode.
