For the last month or two of my season I didn't use the clamshells or the ripening cage and I didn't lose any more figs to the critters that were such a problem early on. It's not ideal to have a fruit that needs to hang "as long as possible" maybe also in high heat -- all while avoiding damage or theft by insects, birds, mammals. It may be better in a greenhouse than out in the open in the NE.Gives the tree a lot of time to adjust and grow the roots and you will mostly see more vigorous growth compared to spring planting. However, this also depends on how you can protect the tree on the winter.
