For the last month or two of my season I didn't use the clamshells or the ripening cage and I didn't lose any more figs to the critters that were such a problem early on. It's not ideal to have a fruit that needs to hang "as long as possible" maybe also in high heat -- all while avoiding damage or theft by insects, birds, mammals. It may be better in a greenhouse than out in the open in the NE.Gives the tree a lot of time to adjust and grow the roots and you will mostly see more vigorous growth compared to spring planting.
