Each thing has a chance of getting a 'bonus' around a certain time, or just randomly, where it increases to the next rank of point giving. People estimate that each rune lights up at each 200 point increment.

The other way is heatbox farming, you get some light from it and farm the items from the heatbox that are worth of some money. NMs aren't much worth for light farming, since just a few of them give good light, and the time you use to kill a NM you can use to kill a lot of monster that give more light than the NM, so just do it if you need other ...
