In normal mode Shem is best given to RM. Monk learns the higher WM spells (WM 4 & 9-13). But Monk is a mediocre healer if you don't have a Magic based secondary job (the Mages & Bushi). Plus Monk requires spending of Hashmal for WM4, Famfrit for WM10 & Chaos for WM 11 & 12. It also needs Quickening 2 for WM 9.

Most guides suggest Fang, Lightning, and Hope for your main team but I had a lot of fun with Snow (party leader), Lightning and Hope (Sazh until Hope gets Haste). Snow made a great party leader - high HP, super quick RAV casts, and great sentinel skills right out the gate. Snow rarely dies so you gain a lot from him being your party leader.
